Pookot Lake
Pookot Lake is a fresh water Lake located in the evergreen forests near Vythiri. The beauty of the lake, reflecting the lush green canopy of the mountains, is further accentuated by the surrounding meadows. The lake, situated at an altitude of 2000 m above MSL, offers a variety of options to unwind and relax; boat-rides being the perfect way to enjoy the scenic beauty of the region. The place has an aquarium, children’s park and a small emporium selling handicrafts and spices.
Chembra Peak
Chembra peak, a vantage point located at an altitude of 2100 m above MSL, offers spectacular views of the surrounding landscape. The peak forms a part of the Western Ghats mountain range, lying in close proximity to the Nilgiri Hills and Vellarimala. The peak is an ideal spot for trekking; the District Tourism Promotion Council arranges guides and necessary equipments on hiring basis.
Chain Tree
According to tribal legends, the area surrounding this tree was once haunted by the specter of a tribal youth. During the times of the British Raj, this youth showed a British engineer a difficult trail to enter Wayanad through the mountainous terrains. The Brit, eager to take credit of the discovery, killed the youth. The restless spirit of the youth started haunting the region to avenge his death until it was finally chained to this tree.
Soojipara Falls
Soojipara waterfalls cascades down the rocky slopes in an awe-inspiring grandeur. Water tumbles down the rocky precipice in three tiers, creating a spectacular display. The waterfall is remotely located inside the dense woods, and is accessible only by a 2 km long trek through the forests. Have fun and enjoy by taking a dip in the pool down the cascade or just frolicking in the spray. The pool below the cascade offers scope for water-rafting and other water-sports.
Meenmutty Falls
This perennial waterfall cascades down a slope of 300 meters in three stages. Meenmutty is the highest and the most captivating of all the waterfalls in Wayanad. The waterfall offers an unmatched visual spectacle - a mélange of silver cascades and mist contrasted against the black rocks and surrounding greenery. The strenuous climb to the summit of the falls is definitely not for the faint-hearted.
Edakkal Caves
Edakkal Caves is famous for its 5000 year old fascinating ancient rock etchings and drawings. A place of immense archeological interest, the cave is frequented by archeologists, historians and tourists alike. There are various scenes of hunting depicted on the walls of the two main chambers. Watch your head as sections of the cave are short with height falling below 5 ft.
Tholpetty Wildlife Sanctuary
Tholpetty Wildlife Sanctuary, situated around 100 km from Vythiri, is a safe refuge for a variety of rare animals. The sanctuary lies within the Nilgiri biosphere, in close proximity to Bandhipur, Nagarhole and Mudumalai wildlife sanctuaries. A variety of animals including the bison, spotted deer, tiger, leopard, bear, wild boar and elephant can be spotted in the sanctuary.
The Ambalavayal Heritage Museum
The museum houses a variety of tribal artifacts including stone weaponry, clay sculptures and hunting equipments dating back to the 2nd century AD. These artifacts bear evidence to the existence of an early advanced civilization in the mountainous terrains of Wayanad. The museum attracts archeologists, historians and travelers alike.
