Backwater cruises

Kerala is famous for its intricate chain of backwaters that are lined by lush green landscapes and sleepy hamlets. So when you plan your Kerala package tours don't miss to take a small cruise on a houseboat. The romantic cruise through the tranquil waters will undoubtedly take you to another world. Don't forget to enjoy the tender coconut water while you sit on the houseboat deck.

Snake boat race

If you are visiting Kerala during July to September months, you shouldn't miss the snake boat races that are held in and around Alappuzha. The snake boats vary from about 100 to about 138 feet long and will have about 100 to 150 oarsmen. It resembles a snake with its hood raised. The most famous among all the boat races is the Nehru Trophy held on Punnamada Lake in Alappuzha.

Enjoy the village life

Kerala is blessed with natural beauty. If you want to experience the beauty and calmness of a typical Kerala village life then you should visit the Kumbalangi tourism village in the suburbs of Ernakulam. At this tiny island, you could explore the traditional village life by taking a long walk along the paddy fields, fishing using traditional methods, boat rides and enjoy the mouth water seafood cuisines of Kerala. There are also many homestays in this little island.

Take a walk through the tea plantations

Another extremely enjoyable activity is to take a stroll through the tea/spice plantations of Munnar or Wayanad. Enjoy the fresh aroma and the cold mountain air while you are here.

A visit to Kodanad

Kodanad elephant training centre on the banks of Periyar river and surrounded by majestic hills of Munnar is one of the largest elephant training centres in Kerala. Visit this place to meet the majestic animals up close.

A sumptuous sadhya

Enjoy the authentic Kerala cuisines while you are here. The traditional Kerala sadhya (usually lunch) which is served on a banana leaf is enjoyed with hand. The traditional sadhya, which consists of various vegetarian dishes along with pickles, pappadam and payasam are served at various restaurants in Kerala.
If you are an admirer of non-vegetarian food, then Kerala is the perfect place for you to enjoy the lip-smacking seafood and spicy meat dishes. Head to the north of Kerala for the enticing Malabar dishes and if you want to enjoy the authentic seafood cuisine, visit any of the toddy shops or proper restaurants that serve those dishes (minus toddy) that borders the Vembanad Lake while you are on a houseboat cruise in Alappuzha.

Art forms of Kerala

Enjoy the traditional art performances of Kerala while you are here. Though Kathakali is the most famous art form of Kerala, the state has many other traditional art forms such as Chakyar Koothu, Nangiar Koothu, Mohiniyattam, Ottamthullal, Theyyam, Chavittu Natakam etc...
Kerala also has its own traditional martial art form called Kalaripayattu. There are various centres in the state that still teach this martial art form.

Enjoy the beaches

Kerala has a very long coastal area and most of these beaches are well developed for the comforts of the tourists. So you can enjoy your vacation under the sun while you are here. Varkala, Kovalam, Cherai, Marari beach, Beypore and Bekal are some of the many beaches of Kerala.

Adventure tourism

There are many tourist places in Kerala which offer adventure tourism activities such as parasailing (most popular in Kovalam and Alappuzha beaches), kayaking (a great way to explore the backwaters of Alappuzha), windsurfing, wildlife safaris, bamboo rafting at Periyar Tiger Reserve, Thekkady, white water rafting through Tejaswini River (Kannur) trekking etc... So it is also a great place for all the adrenaline junkies out there.

Live in a tree house

Many resorts in Wayanad and Thekkady area offer their patrons a unique experience of staying in a traditional tree house, called 'erumadam' in Malayalam,  perched on a giant tree. You can stay very close to the Mother Nature. It will be an awesome romantic experience to view the morning mist touching the ground while you sip a hot cup of tea or coffee from the tree house balcony.
