The water is safe and clean for swimming. Situated 13 km from the capital city of Thiruvananthapuram, Kovalam is hugely popular among honey moon couples and families as well.

There are three different beaches in Kovalam, which includes the Lighthouse Beach at the South, Hawah beach at the centre and the Samudra beach towards the north. The lighthouse which towers over the beach at a height of 35 meters is the main attraction of the beach. Located on top of the Kurumkal hill, the light house extends towards the sea. The visitors can climb up the stairs to reach the top of the light house to have a bird’s eye of the settings around. Kovalam beach offers many water based activities like surfing , catamaran cruise and swimming. There are many ayurvedic spa centres around for those who wish to have rejuvenating ayurvedic body massage. The best time to visit is between September and March. There are many small stalls along the beach that sells virtually everything under the sun that ranges from shells , paintings and wood materials that make perfect mementos for someone special back home.

Varkala Beach

Varkala and Papanashanam beach are not just popular among sun worshippers and holiday makers but also among pilgrims. Varkala is famous for its 2000 year old Janardhana Swami Temple, which stands atop a cliff overlooking the beach. The medicinal water spring is another attraction of this beach. The Sivagiri Mutt, which is the Samadhi of the great Hindu reformer and philosopher Sree Narayana Guru is nother must visit place nearby. The papanasam beach is popular among Hindus for conducting the obsequies of the departed souls.

Cherai Beach

Located in Ernakulam district of Kerala Cherai beach is the best place to see the beauty of Chinese nets, to spot dolphins or to enjoy a spell of swimming in its calm waters. The beach is just a 30 minute drive from Ernakulam and can also be reached by boat. The western part of this beach consists of the sea while the eastern part opens to the backwaters. The palm fringed coastline adds up to its beauty of the beach, which also makes it a popular movie shooting locale as well.

Marari Beach in Alappuzha

Alappuzha, better known as the Venice of the east is famous for atleast a million reasons including houseboat cruise, meandering waterways and above all the scenic beach with an iconic 140 year old pier that juts right into the sea . Marari beach has an old lighthouse and a beach park, which offers leisure activities for both the young and young at heart. The beach is easily accessible and is only 11 km from Alappuzha town, The beach is clean and safe for swimming.

Beypore Beach

The beach is located at a distance of over 10 km in Kozhikode, at Beypore, which is world famous for its dhow making industry and fishing harbours. Beypore has been a hub of dhow making since time immemorial and has attracted international acclaim. The tourists can take a closer look at the traditional art of making these massive, hand -made country boats called dhows, locally known as ‘uru’.

The beach lies in the mouth of the Chaliyar river. Some of the nearby tourist attractions include the Kadalundi Bird Sanctuary, which sits in an island and is home to a range of local as well as migratory birds.
