Chennai, The Gateway to South India

Chennai, the erstwhile seat of Madras Presidency, is today the 4th largest city in India. The city of Madras (presently Chennai) was founded by the East India Company in the year 1639. Madras gave the British their first serious foothold on the Indian soil. Fort St. George, built as a small fortified warehouse, later became the epicenter from where the company flourished. Madras holds a distinct place in India’s history. It is here the East India Company made its first grand profits and recruited their first native armies.
